While I may still be in the honeymoon phase of ownership, I genuinely love this smoker. Despite being a household of two, the additional pellets the XL version uses are negligible. Following the user manual, I started seasoning the grill, meticulously following each step, even using the recommended brand of pellets. However, a few minutes into the ignition process, the WiFIRE system sent me a notification through the app, stating it couldn’t complete the ignition and advised checking the pellets. To cut a long story short, after a prolonged chat conversation with an agent and two phone calls and video calls, it was determined that I needed to disassemble the auger motor under the hopper to remove the broken auger at the welding points. The agent mentioned it was the first time she encountered such an issue, and I was informed that it would take over ten days to receive the replacement part.
During one of the phone calls, I inquired about any compensation for the inconvenience, suggesting a gift card or something similar. The response was that the request wasn’t approved internally, but the agent offered to send me a sticker – a rather unexpected resolution for a $1400 smoker/grill, leaving me less than satisfied with the overall experience.

However, the box arrived in less than ideal condition, showing numerous puncture markings and dents in the cardboard. During assembly, the crew observed that the front right leg was dented and scratched, and the pellet feeder house had sustained damage in the bottom right corner, now exhibiting peeling and flaking paint, which is likely to rust over time.
I promptly reached out to customer support, and while they were willing to offer a refund, they couldn’t provide a replacement. Eventually, I settled for a partial refund. As this is intended to be a Christmas gift for someone special, I’m disappointed to present something of this high cost in its current condition.
Despite this setback, I do recommend opting for professional assembly. My disappointment lies more with how the product was packaged by Traeger. I’ll provide an update on the overall experience after using the product.

The most significant problem is the poorly placed chute for emptying the pellet hopper—right over the rear wheel, making it quite challenging to use.
The probe, while not as thick as some, still requires insertion up to 1 1/2 inches.
These issues warrant deducting one star.
I wisely chose the Delivery/Assemble/Haul-off option, and it was a decision I appreciated. Getting rid of the old 130lb grill was well worth it.

Following a 15+ hour brisket cook, I noticed that there was no grease collected in the drip bucket. Upon inspection, I discovered that all the grease had accumulated at the very bottom of the barrel underneath the fire pot. This posed a significant safety risk, and I consider myself fortunate that there wasn’t a fire incident. I had to dismantle the unit entirely, thoroughly clean it, and correct the installation to ensure proper functioning and safety.

Traeger addressed this by replacing the entire hopper assembly. Now, the main fan is exhibiting a high-pitched whine, indicating a potential bearing failure.
While Traeger is providing warranty service, the recurring issues with Chinese-made parts are wearing thin. I never encountered such problems with my Pitboss. I regret this purchase and, despite having it for a while, wish I could return it. It’s surprising considering I don’t use the grill frequently, and it’s stored covered in my garage. Consider this a warning – this brand and grill may not be as reliable as expected.

The grill thermometer on the Traeger Ironwood XL is notably inaccurate. My initial three cooks were prolonged as every recipe required double the suggested cooking time. To verify the accuracy, I purchased a Smoke X4 thermometer, which revealed significant discrepancies in the Traeger’s readings.
For instance, when the Traeger indicates a temperature of 205 degrees, the X4 thermometer at grill level near the meat registers 178 degrees. Similarly, when the Traeger reads 211 degrees, the X4 thermometer reports 190 degrees. This discrepancy explains the extended cooking times.
While the grill is generally excellent, potential buyers should be aware of this significant issue. I can’t confirm if the normal-sized Ironwood has the same problem, but if you’re experiencing extended cooking times and don’t want to invest in an additional thermometer, adjusting the Traeger temperature slightly might be a practical solution.

Super Smoke mode excels, particularly up to 225 degrees, and contrary to some reviews, I haven’t experienced any issues with smoke. Despite the price, I would happily purchase this grill again and highly recommend it to those seeking a premium pellet grill. Despite the substantial investment in a $2000 grill, the inability to receive a small part promptly left me dissatisfied, questioning the customer support.
Considering the circumstances, this might be my first and last Traeger experience. Working for a Major Appliance Manufacturer, where we prioritize customer satisfaction, this level of support fell short. Even after the replacement part arrived, the grill remained non-functional, prompting Traeger to suggest replacing the motherboard. The lack of immediate service and the subsequent impact on my planned events left me frustrated.
An update: The situation led me to contact Amazon, where I encountered a helpful advisor. Despite missing planned events, Amazon is providing a new replacement grill under the 30-day return policy, highlighting their commitment to customer satisfaction. The ongoing issues with the Ironwood XL and the questionable customer support from Traeger raise concerns about the product’s quality.
There seems to be a pattern of similar complaints, and the scripted approach from Traeger’s customer support, emphasizing part replacement over immediate resolution, adds to the overall disappointment.

The assembly process took approximately 50 minutes, excluding WiFi setup and the seasoning phase. During the seasoning, which requires almost an additional hour, you can conveniently set up the WiFi and create a Traeger account.
A minor observation: the international cords were delivered alongside the U.S. power cord, causing initial confusion. Consolidating all power cords into the same box might streamline this process.
After completing the seasoning, I prepared a 3.5 lb tri-tip. Initiating the pre-heat, I loaded the “Smoked Tri-Tip” recipe via the app, utilizing the “Super Smoke” option to test its functionality.
Quick tip: it’s advisable to wait until the pre-heat is finished before hitting “Start Cooking” or manually enter the steps on the grill once pre-heat is complete.
The overall cook time was around 1.5 hours, maintaining the grill at 225 degrees with the probe set for 135. The subsequent reverse sear steps took an additional 25 minutes.

I’m uncertain if the grill is defective, but despite having super smoke turned on and cooking for extended periods, there’s barely a hint of smoke flavor in the food. While it functions adequately as a grill, the extended time it takes to heat up is a drawback. Considering the cost, I wouldn’t recommend it.

On the second use, the grill unexpectedly flared up, reaching 750 degrees and shutting itself off. It took a frustrating 45 minutes to get it relit. In hindsight, I regret not sticking with Pit Boss. Traeger has proven to be a waste of money.

Cons: The temperature can exceed the target by 50 degrees until it settles, requiring occasional lid opening for a quick cool-off. A shelf under the smoker would have been a nice addition.
The most significant downside: the lack of smoke. Despite trying the “super smoke” feature, the desire for smoke at all temperatures remains unmet. To address this, I use stainless steel 12″ pellet tubes (highly recommended) with a propane torch. Care should be taken not to overfill these tubes, leaving an air gap above the pellets for the entire length. Mixing in wood chips is also recommended.
While Traeger achieves a desirable “blue smoke” relatively quickly, it occurs only after the meat has been fully smoked. Unfortunately, this results in minimal smoke flavor being imparted.

After owning a Pro 22, I decided to upgrade to the Ironwood 650 due to the direct drive motor and enhanced smoke circulation, and I’m thrilled with my purchase. My initial cook, a bone-in pork shoulder using the super smoke function for the first few hours, yielded excellent results. Recently, I performed a reverse sear on a thick T-bone steak, achieving perfect grill marks and a juicy result by finishing it at 500 degrees after reaching 110 internally.
The delivery from Amazon was seamless, with a two-man team placing the package in my garage. Although free setup was offered, I opted to do it myself to ensure it was done correctly. The setup was straightforward and took about an hour, with the only assistance needed being to stand the grill upright after attaching the legs and leg braces. The Ironwood maintains temperatures more consistently than my Pro 22, and the improved recovery time after opening the lid is a significant enhancement.
I use Cookin Pellets brand pellets, and they perform exceptionally well, imparting a delightful smoky flavor. In an update, I’ve come across reviews mentioning a lack of visible smoke from the Traeger 650. It’s worth noting that this design intentionally circulates and retains smoke within the chamber for a longer duration. In contrast, my Pro 22 releases smoke from the chimney, resulting in excellent outcomes but not retaining the smoke as effectively. While the final BBQ product may not be as intensely smoky as a wood-burning offset smoker, the ease of use and excellent results with the right pellets make the Ironwood 650 a valuable investment.

I echo another reviewer’s sentiment, describing the Ironwood 885 as a smokeLESS convection oven. To my dismay, this grill failed to produce any smoke, even after the startup cycle. There was no discernible aroma of burning pellets, leaving me in disbelief. I went as far as emptying the hopper and trying fresh pellets from the store, but the outcome remained the same – no smoke or aroma. Even my wife noticed the lack of any smell while the grill was in operation. Super smoke mode provided no improvement, only larger temperature fluctuations.
Adding to the frustration, the Traeger app has been dysfunctional since ownership. It stops updating cook data when idle, necessitating a force close and reopen to retrieve updated temperatures and other information, rendering it practically useless. This issue appears to have been widespread since Thanksgiving 2022, evident from the app reviews on the Play Store. This downfall makes it far from a smart grill. Spending $1,600 on a grill with a malfunctioning app for months at a time is unacceptable.
The only scenario where a positive review might be feasible is if someone has never owned a pellet grill/smoker before and is unaware of what to expect. Even then, I struggle to imagine satisfaction at this price level. My old $400 Pit Boss vertical smoker from Lowes outperforms this so-called “premium” grill. If you’re considering investing this much in a pellet grill, I strongly recommend saving a bit longer and opting for one from Lone Star Grillz, Yoder, or another company producing genuine premium products that both smoke and have functional apps. Alternatively, save your money and opt for a cheaper unit from a big-box store, ensuring a more flavorful and enjoyable experience. I sincerely hope my experience was an anomaly, and others aren’t facing the same issues with smoke production and flavor. Traeger also needs to address the app issues urgently for the benefit of all their customers, as it has been two months of disappointment for many.

Previously, I had an offset wood-burning smoker for years, which produced excellent food but involved more hassle. The Ironwood, with its convenience, may not generate as much smoke as an offset, but it still imparts enough for delicious and hassle-free meals.

During the seasoning process, it takes a few minutes for the pellets to ignite and a bit more time to reach the desired temperature, following the included manual’s instructions made this process effortless.
I noticed that the most smoke is produced at temperatures of 225 and below, and even more smoke is generated when utilizing the super smoke option. My Ironwood 885 had no difficulty reaching 500 degrees. If there’s anything I can recommend, it would be to consider getting the replacement lid seal (pimp my grill) and the folding front shelf. I’m extremely pleased with my purchase!

Before deciding on this grill, I recommend comparing it with the competition. My review is for the Traeger Ironwood 650.
I received my grill a week ago, and Amazon did an excellent job delivering it to my front door. However, I want to highlight a few aspects. The fold-down front table and cover are not included, adding an extra $150 to the total purchase price, making it about $1550. It’s worth noting that Traeger charges $500 more than Pit Boss and requires an additional $150 for a complete grill with a cover.
The casters are made of cheap plastic, including plastic locks. While I expected rubberized or plastic wheels with metal wheel locks, these were cheaply made. The castors didn’t lock in any position, prompting me to contact Traeger customer service. Unfortunately, there was no dedicated phone support option; instead, I had to use my smartphone to access their chat or email support. After a lengthy chat, they concluded that the wheels were defective and promised to send a replacement set.
The overall fit of the grill is good, but the metal is thinner than expected for a grill of this price. Additionally, there’s only one port for a meat probe, while less expensive competitors offer 2 or 4 probes. I solved this by purchasing an additional $150 radio multi-probe meat thermometer, so consider this added cost.
On the positive side, the Traeger app works well and pairs seamlessly with the grill. However, the single meat probe limits the app’s usefulness. This being my first pellet grill, there’s a noticeable reduction in smoke flavor compared to my offset smoker. I tried the super smoke feature with Traeger mesquite pellets, resulting in a mild smoke flavor. Some Traeger recipes on the app recommend cooking at 250°F with super smoke, but the 650 limits super smoke to 225°F or lower cooking temperatures.
While the grill is user-friendly, my pork butts and ribs, while tender and juicy, lacked the expected smoky flavor. Conversations with friends who own competitors to Traeger indicate that the competition achieves similar results. In conclusion, I feel I bought into the Traeger hype and overpaid for a grill that is more cheaply made than expected and falls short of its high price.

Last year, I decided to “upgrade” to the 650, excited to elevate my smoking game. The initial cooks went well, but then problems arose. I started getting inaccurate temperature readings. The customer service team was helpful and sent me a new probe.
However, when the part arrived, it turned out to be the wrong one. I contacted customer service again, and they apologized before sending me the correct part. The smoker worked well for the next nine months.
Recently, I encountered an issue where the fan wasn’t working. Despite the helpful guidance from customer service to reset it, the problem persisted. They offered to send me a new fan, but it’s been 12 days, and I’m still waiting. Unfortunately, I missed Labor Day and my birthday celebrations due to a non-functional smoker.
To make matters worse, when I borrowed my friend’s Traeger, which he bought after experiencing mine, it showed an error indicating that the heating element wasn’t working. This means no brisket for our housewarming party.
I’ve recommended Traeger to five friends, and they all bought one after enjoying meals at my house. It’s disheartening to write this review because I’ve loved the product, but the recent issues have been a significant letdown. I sincerely hope Traeger addresses these concerns and gets things back on track.

As the heating element started to wear out, I decided to upgrade to a new Traeger and after extensive research, settled on the Ironwood. While a bit on the pricey side, I found the same model at a local hardware store for $2K. Assembly was relatively straightforward; I managed it solo, needing assistance only to turn it upright. The initial setup involves a pre-cook to eliminate any residue from the parts. My first cook involved chicken thighs, and they turned out fantastic. Utilizing the Super Smoke for 30 minutes and then increasing to 450°F yielded excellent results. Subsequent cooks with steak and shrimp were equally successful. With the Ironwood, I appreciate the additional features, and the Super Smoke option was a major selling point for me. While Costco offers Traeger models, they carry a distinct series not found on Amazon. The WiFi capability is a great addition, even though I had some difficulty finding the app on my old phone. Overall, very satisfied with my choice, and I’m looking forward to trying a brisket flat soon, hopeful for that authentic Texas BBQ taste.
